Why Fins are Needed for Scuba Diving
When diving deep under the water, scuba fins are necessary to provide a wide surface which can be pushed against the water to propel the diver forward. This gives the diver full control over their ability to move throughout the underwater environment. Similar fins can be seen on the tails of fish and other underwater creatures that are naturally adapted to the environment. How Fins Work
Fins are long flat surfaces which are able to provide resistance against the water in order to accelerate the diver. This means that fins are able to propel a diver forward as well as offer underwater agility to dodge hazardous objects. Fins do the opposite of an aerodynamic car, which seeks to allow air to move around the car by utilizing a rounded design. Fins simply do the opposite by having a flat surface which maximizes contact with the water. While not being used to propel a diver, these fins are also helpful because they minimize resistance while not in use. When divers are not pushing forward, these fins are actually able to be aerodynamic. This flexibility means that fins are exceptional tools to make humans better-equip underwater.
Fin Accessories
There are many features available for fins today that can enhance a diver's performance while underwater. One example is a rib, which is a grooved area that is designed to catch more water while trying to maneuver sideways. Normal fins are flat, and can make this somewhat difficult, especially for inexperienced divers. Other fins have vents which can be appropriate for difficult diving conditions such as in a river or when there is a substantial undercurrent.
Materials
Many fins are composed of rubber, but today there are other materials available to help divers. Composite materials are available that are easier to propel because they are lighter on a diver's feet. Depending on the diving conditions, either rubber, plastic, or composite materials could be appropriate.
Hand Fins
For additional maneuverability, hand fins are available which can make it easier for divers to get around. Those that have difficulty using legs may be able to use hand fins as an effective alternative to propulsion with one's feet. These types of fins can also be appropriate in more difficult diving situations such as diving in Bahamas where rock hazards and underwater creatures may force a divers to quickly maneuver out of danger.
Types of Fins
Since fins give divers the ability to control their movement underwater, there are many different types of fins that are available for divers today. The most common type of fins are full-foot fins. These fins go on like regular shoes and are suitable for most common dives in shallow waters and warm weather conditions. These fins might be appropriate for diving in Bahamas since they won't come off while underwater and are great for shallow dives.
Another type of fin is the adjustable heel fin. These provide the most power to propel divers forward while under the water. They are appropriate for more extensive dives or for divers that simply want the best. Adjustable heel fins can also protect the feet while first entering the water.
